Whisk

Culinary definition of whisk:  To beat liquid or loose ingredients using a whisk or whip.

It is possible to use a whisk to whip as above, but most often recipes call for ingredients to be whisked, - that is to create a well-incorporated silky smooth mixture by using a kind of fast, sideways stirring motion that lifts the whisk out of the ingredients slightly and then back down into them.

Examples: whisking eggs (above) for scrambling, whisking vinaigrettes, mayonnaise, dressings, etc to emulsify (blend disparate ingredients until bound).

It helps to pick up the whisking bowl and cradle it against you as shown, then whisk quickly and close in to your body.   The popular and ultra-rich Italian dessert Zabaglione consists of little more than beautifully whisked egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, heavy cream and sweet wine.
