Culinary definition of pare or peel: To remove, by cutting, the peel from vegetables or fruits.
C@H FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Pare is a bit of an old-fashioned word that you don't hear very much anymore. The small, curved 'paring' knife is an indispensible kitchen tool - named of course for its potato-peeling culinary raison d'être.
Today, various styles of wishbone peelers allow us to peel everything from shiny apples to fuzzy peaches, with ease. It's still worth mastering the paring knife however, as there are few things more gratifying than hand-peeling a great pile of apples for pies.
✭ ✭ ✭ Nutritious and delicious snacks that children love are a snap - just use your paring knife to turn-and-pare continuous and curly strips of peel from tart apples like Granny Smiths. For an extra delicious (but not quite so nutritious) surprise, sprinkle the cut side of the peel with a mix of super-fine sugar and cinnamon. This is a great way to keep the children in the kitchen - talking, eating and learning to love cooking.
