More-or-less the same as 'stir' but conventionally used primarily to describe dense mixtures that don't turn over or move as easily as those that would be stirred - ie: 'stir the soup or the stock' and 'mix the cake batter'.
Mixing and blending are often used interchangeably, though mixing is generally always a round and round motion.
